Paradigm Shifts, Niching Down, and Doing Something New

Paradigm shifts do not happen every day, and in writing, paradigm shifts seem to be something that happens only every half decade. Because of this, there is a temptation to niche down when writing. Some would call this choosing a genre. The reason behind this is to make what you write fit into a specific market. When you write and there is already a market for what you write, it is more likely that you are going to sell books. But if you are niching down, are you likely to make a big impact on the literary world? Perhaps.
